Health Walk - Tuesday 6th December - Heavy showers during the night after a few miserable showery days so we weren't very optimistic as we set out from the Sports Centre on our regular Tuesday Health Walk.
Dedrah had set out to meet us but she'd got waylaid at the church. We were eagerly hoping to see Jacqueline but she had hurt her back and Carole had problems too. Jim and June are still waiting the results of Jim's tests and Mary was on duty elsewhere so we were reduced to six - Elizabeth 1, Elizabeth 2, Gareth, Helen, Sue and I, Michael.
Gareth, our leader, asked us were should we go but he'd already planned a new adventure!
We set off south passing the Beaumont pub and crossed the main road, turning right and then left into Fir Tree Road until we came to Sheep Hill Lane, the old through road to Brindle. We turned left along this road, crossed the A6 and down Radburn Brow. We passed the Lord Nelson pub (I used to go in there as a child with my maternal Grandad) and turned off the road into a wooded walk. this footpath took us through trees until we came out on to Westwood Road, the new road to Brindle. We continued east and up the hill to the roundabout were we joined Sandy Lane, the old road to Brindle again.
This is were the Lancaster Canal used to be. Not many people realise that it was the Lancaster Canal, the only section left south of Preston leaves the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Whittle-Le-Woods until it disappears under the M61. Most people think of it as the spur of the Leeds and Liverpool that went to Walton Summit. This is sad to me because I spent a lot of my childhood at my maternal Grandparents farm on Kellet Lane, all the lovely canal and green fields are now motorways and a huge industrial estate.
We crossed Sandy Lane along a footpath to Ashdown Drive. I decided, that despite the gloom, I should try and take some photos.
We followed the Drive along and round and down to Chorley Old Road.
We crossed the road into another wooded walk with apparently underused seats. We came out on Radburn Brow again and climbed up and across the A6 again and along Sheep Hill Lane, crossing the new road
into Cam Lane. This was our only venture into the Park, the first Health Walk that has not been mostly in the Park.
We left Cam Lane and followed the path back to the ASDA car park and the Sports Centre for tea and Biscuits. Not a drop of rain fell on us! As I write this in the afternoon it's pouring down again outside. |
