Summer Series 5 & Aurthur Ingram Trophy |
Sunday 21st July 2013 - Glasson Sailing Club Please click on the photos to see a larger one. Thanks to OOD Ivan Haslam and Patrol Boat driver Steve Speakman and Steve Speakman for the photos Steve's Video of the day's racing & sailing The weather has changed, gone was the sunshine and the wind was easterly force 3 gusting force 4 but eight boats took to the water to race plus Peter in his rebuilt Solo, Doug in his Pilot Boat and Ian in Mytilus . Besides the races counting towards the Summer Series Trophy, today was the postponed Arthur Ingram Trophy. It was heartening to see so many boats out, especially to me as I've put a lot of time and effort in to revive dinghy racing. Sincere thanks to all of you especially as it was an early start. Ivan set the course, which was to do for both races, CURLEWp - Hp - Ap - Sp. Yes we used a cruiser because we have no marks upstream at the moment - not a very good idea under the testing conditions because of possible chance to cause damage to Curlew. As Ivan wasn't racing it looked like the winner would be either Owen or Big John. We hadn't much time for the first race so it was over three laps for the fast boats and two laps for the rest. There was some confusion over the start but we all got away fighting the wind and waves, wind over tide. I think all of us had 'exciting experiences' very soon. Jack had the toughest challenge keeping his RS600 upright. He's doing really well handling what is an outright performance machine, he could do with longer courses and longer legs but he's learning fast. Steve turned out to be the winner of the first race, after the handicaps had been calculated, by a decent margin with Michael, me, second. Ivan decided to keep the same course for the second race after high water and, as we had more time, it was over four and three laps. Although the course is the same, because of the tide, it is completely different. By now the tide had turned reducing the size of the waves but the wind was still tricky. Unfortunately Steve wanted to go and check his cruiser on the moorings so he elected not to race. Duncan got off to a flying start and was well ahead by the second mark but the pressure of leading got to him. There were several capsizes, all of which I didn't see because of concentrating to keep the Topper upright. Michael Won the second race, pity Steve didn't start. Michael had the best total points for the two races so he is the winner of the Arthur Ingram Trophy.
Summer Series Table and Arthur Ingram Table - The Summer Series Table is a bit iffy as it includes percentage points for duty weekends. Michael is leading but it is an unusual set of circumstances which create this anomaly. |
