OOD Bob
The weather was interesting and the wind south Force 2 - 5.
Apart from the days when it was too windy to race, I think today has been the worse wind day for a long time. Cruel gusts and, judging by the patterns on the water for the first race, all over the place. This photo shows the surface towards the end of the second race when the wind had quieted down or rather the gusts were not as strong and unpredictable.
The course, which was to do for both races, Bs - Gs - Ap - 18s - Ss : 3 and 2 laps.
The racers:
Owen - Laser Radial Ivan - Laser Chris - Mirror
Ivan completing his rigging helped by Bob, OOD, with only seconds to go to the start
They're off into the first race. The conditions were really tricky with the wind in the south and squalls racing by overhead. The first lap was a beam reach and when they rounded the mark B they went on to a run on the same tack, just letting the sail out. At the next mark, G, they had to gybe which caused no end of difficulties.
Chris was doing well when Silver River caused him to give way and get swept upstream.
Despite several capsizes Ivan just managed to win the first race. The race should have been 3 laps for Ivan and Owen with two for Chris but we stopped them after 2 laps and 1 lap to give them some much needed relief before the start of the second race. We had had a late start and were running out of time.
The second race is underway with Chris approaching the first mark, B, and Ivan and Owen surging towards the second mark, G. Conditions were a little better now, the black clouds had gone and there was more sunshine.
Close racing with Ivan and Owen
On the last lap of the second race
Owen finished first and won the second race.
