Saturday
Dave & Jeff preparing the Patrol Boat and later exchanging pleasantries with Stedfast
Again the weather was interesting and the wind mostly southwesterly Force 2 gusting 3.
The course was to do for both races, Cs - Gs - Ap - 18s - Ss : 3 and 2 laps.
The first race got away well but there developed a snag!
Wol Thusen was intent on joining the toing and froing across the estuary. Not content with our sound signals she made five long blasts of her own. I guess she wanted us to keep out of the way - you can just see Owen beyond her stern. The fast boats crossed her bows, which caused another five blasts but I don't think we impeded her progress, I hope she was just being cautious. The slower ones had to wait until she passed which allowed the tide to sweep us upstream. All good fun.
John won the first race with Owen second, Ivan third.
Preparing for the race across the Bay?
More fun!
Wilson Astakos was approaching Sunderland. We decide to wait until she had reched Number 9 channel marker (the green one) before starting the second race sequence, which worked out fine.
Start of the second race
The fast boats were starting their second leg, C to G, just as she passed the ground track and John is clear astern, no hooters from this one. Duncan late starting?
John leading Owen and Ivan towards the finish of the second race. The second race ended the same, John winning with Owen second and Ivan third.
The above ten photos by Dave
Michael asking Duncan "What happened". Duncan had sailed well leading Michael throughout the entire second race until rounding the last mark, 18, after which Michael suddenly appeared in front. Duncan had inexplicably got caught in irons.
Saturday Results
Latest Summer Series Table - Owen's still leading with Ivan into second place, Chris third.
Saturday's course
There were other activities on the water
Anthony & Kath were giving their grandson his first outing in the Dinghy, he has sailed in their big boat.
Sunday
Thanks to Michael Swarbrick for being the OOD. Thanks to Steve Speakman for manning the Patrol Boat and Michael Swarbrick for the report
Much warmer today but the promised sunshine didn't arrive until some time after the racing!
For the start of the first race the wind was mostly westerly but by the second race it was more southwesterly. It was F2-3 but by the end of the second race it had ameliorated somewhat.
Everyone elected to use the same course as Saturday, for both races as it turned out.
The sailors tacked up to the windward mark, C, some forgetting the tide was surging in and tacked across the river to their detriment. The course was the same as yesterday but the tide carried all the sailors with it and reaching the marks was difficult, the boats being swept upstream causing them to sail a much longer course than the theoretical blue.
Duncan and Chris are on the leg from G to A and Ivan is on the leg from A to 18. You can see how far off the theoretical ground track the boats are.
Here Ivan is leading Owen. After about eighteen minutes a sea mist drifted in.
The count down to the second race
Ivan and Owen get away first
After an undistinguished first race Duncan finishes ahead of Chris but Chris still beats him on handicap.
The corrected time calculations for the second race show that CHRIS HAD WON HIS FIRST RACE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations Chris. It was Chris' first win a Glasson, justifying his winning of the 2013 'Most Improved Helm trophy' presented at the Regatta. A short video of him at his best on Sunday
