Minutes of the Dinghy Meeting held on Sunday 23 March 1997 at 1430 hours in the clubhouse

Present: M Topping, L Jamieson, P Milston, P Squires, J Harrison, R Beecroft, G Stothers, A Stothers, I R Florio, C Warkman, A J Gask, J M Swarbrick (Chairman)

Apologies were received from Sean O’Sullivan, T Jamieson & A Whiteside

The minutes of the meeting held on 15 April 1990 where accepted but not confirmed as a true and correct record on account of the elapsed time.

The main points of the above minutes where mentioned.

43 letters had been sent out to members who had dinghies or who had indicated they were interested in dinghy meetings.

The 1997 programme was explained and accepted. It was agreed to discuss the format again at the end of the season if it was thought the number and/or character of races needed amending.

At least two boats must be on the water to start a race.

Race scoring for the individual events would remain unchanged. For the series events: at the end of the series the total number of boats having taken part would constitute the number of starters for each race. Eg if a total 10 boats raced over the series any boat not taking part in a race would receive 10+2 = 12 points for that race. The points system as used by the Helford River Sailing Club was rejected.

Prizes would be presented for the individual events based on the entry fees collected. All the entry fees, with the exception of the RNLI Pennant race (pennant presented by the RNLI), would be redistributed in prizes. Prizes, engraved glasses, had been purchased to take advantage of 1996 prices. Each successful crew member would receive a glass (plus a prize or sponsorship if any are donated or received).

It was agreed to charge entry fees for the individual events (all series events are free entry). A crewed boat would be charged £5, a single hander £3 and juniors £1,50 per boat.

Member were asked to seek sponsorship for the club. Martin Topping agreed to try one source. Michael Swarbrick would approach the Lancaster Guardian.

It was agreed to make the Lancaster Guardian Trophy, Glasson Week, Ladies Races and the Regatta open events. Michael Swarbrick to advertise.

Members were requested to volunteer for at least two duties (OOD and/or Rescue Boat) and encouraged to ask their families and friends and any one who could be persuaded to have a go. At this time in the clubs history it is important that we get as many boats on the water as possible. Martin Topping volunteered to take classes if groups of people were organised for him.

Derek Tierney has been on an RYA Safety Boat course and he is willing to give instruction to people in the Safety Boat. Derek is now responsible for the Rescue Boat.

Tony Jamieson is providing a new OOD Box. Alan Round has provided a whiteboard to help organise the races.

We need weights, heavy pieces of angle iron and ropes to make racing marks (buoys). Members were asked to see what they could do. Michael Swarbrick said he would make up and lay the buoys if others would provide the equipment. Peter Milston volunteered to supply a couple of weights.

A lot of people are requesting training. Martin Topping volunteered to man the rescue boat and give sailing instruction to a group of people in their boats as and when they could organise themselves. Stephen Jones had earlier volunteered to organise the juniors but he has contacted me since.

We need a new flag pole. Martin Topping to organise.

Alan Round has volunteered to refurbish the Wayfarer but if he cannot find the time Martin Topping will organise a temporary refit.

Their are now two West Elevens (GRP Mirrors) available for training. Jeff Walker is going to organise a new transom for one of them and Michael Swarbrick will rig the boat. A new cover is to be purchased and any necessary fittings.

It was requested that the racing rule changes go into the newsletter.

Are we going to organise anything for Glasson Week? Will all members intending to stay and take part in Glasson Week please contact Michael Swarbrick.

A dinghy cruise to Piel has been suggested, probably early June, obviously depending on excellent weather. Would all who are interested see Michael Swarbrick.

There is a need for activities to be organised to help non-racers to get on the water. Any ideas or volunteers to help see Michael Swarbrick.

The next meeting will be in late autumn or earlier if required.

The meeting closed at 1530 hours.
