Why not join Glasson Sailing Club
Ring Michael on 01772 451818 for more information and an application form. You'll be very welcome!
Glasson Sailing Club is sited on Fishnet Point in the Lune Estuary to the west of the village of Glasson Dock.
The Club, which came into existence in 1961 with a club room at the back of the Victoria Hotel on the East Quay, moved to its present premises in 1972. The Clubhouse contains changing rooms, complete with showers and toilets, a committee room/television room and a large clubroom (with bar and galley) which commands fine views across the river and the surrounding countryside.
The land around the building provides adequate parking for member's cars, dinghies, trailer sailors, cruiser tenders and during the winter months for cruisers. Camping is permitted on club land for 60 specified dates per year. The club is particularly suitable for young families and people who want to get away for the weekend. There are many and varied walks and interesting places to visit to occupy those members of the family who are not dedicated to sailing.
A 1 in 9 concrete slip way runs down to the foreshore and can be used for launching most boats of up to 4.5 metres wide (A weight limit of 8 tons per launching trailer axle). An electric powered winch is available for this purpose. There is a large apron at the side of the slip to facilitate rigging prior to launch and recovery. There is a combined sloping and horizontal jetty to the east of the slipway. This is suitable for the temporary drying out of keelboats, and loading and unloading.
Sailing in the Estuary is dominated by the tide which must be treated with considerable respect and care. Although there is a safety boat at the Clubhouse, it is usually only manned during weekend races.
The Club has upwards of 150 members who have a wide variety of interests, and there are activities for dinghy racers, day boaters, cruisers (motor or sailing). Racing for dinghies takes place from Easter until Christmas each year, with events on most Saturdays and Sundays and two Open Regattas in summer. Racing is organised on a handicap basis (with adjusted P.Y ratings for the slower boats to allow for our local conditions), but class fleets may be adopted as numbers and interest grow. Currently, Albacores, 5-0-5s, Darts, Fireballs, GP14s, Graduates, Lasers, Mirrors, Ospreys, Scorpions, Solos, Toppers and Toys are represented at Glasson. Many members, however, are quite content to potter and the Lune Estuary provides excellent family sailing, either downstream towards Sunderland Point and Morecambe Bay or by following the river as it meanders through open pastures towards Lancaster.
The Club controls the moorings in the river to the east and south of the clubhouse, and at present a few mooring sites are available.
There are presently no restrictions on membership and we are happy to receive applications from anyone with an interest in sailing boats and boating. The classes of membership are as follows. For individual sailors, "Full Membership" is appropriate. This entitles a person to use the full facilities of the Club, including voting at the AGM. If more than one member of the same family uses any of the facilities; a second rate is available and appears as "Family Membership" on the application form. "Social Membership" is available for those people who take no part in the sailing activities but who wish to enjoy the social side of the Club's life. An entry fee is required for Full and Family membership. There is a lower rate for individual social members but the difference between the two rates is required if the member subsequently decides to become involved with sailing activities and transfers his or her membership category. "Junior Membership" for the 18-year-olds and under does not involve the payment of an entry fee. We now have special rates for OAPs
Between January and the end of July in any year, both the entry fee and the current membership fee must be sent with the application form. After July 1st, the entry fee should be accompanied by half the membership fee, and after October 1st, both the entry fee and the current membership fee must be sent with the application form, but this will cover you for the next year as well. The Club rules require that an application for membership be proposed and seconded by two people who are currently members of Glasson S.C of at least one year's standing and who are personally acquainted with the applicants. For some, this requirement cannot be fulfilled and in these circumstances we ask that applicants should meet one of the senior Club Officers (i.e. Commodore, Secretary or Rear Membership Secretary) so that he can endorse the application after personal contact with the applicant has been established. Every application is considered by the Main Committee. This body meets about once per month so there might be some delay between your application form being received and your membership being considered. The committee has the power to refuse membership or to place names on a waiting list, although the power is rarely exercised.
After an application has been accepted, the Membership Secretary will send out a current membership card, a car sticker, a racing programme, a copy of the Glasson S.C rules and a key to the clubhouse, if the fee has been paid. Before a boat is brought on to the boat park or launched by the slip way, a statement of insurance with third party cover of at least £500,000 must be signed and returned to the Membership Secretary. If a boat is to be left on the boat park an application for berthing should be made prior to leaving the boat, as directed on the notice board in the clubhouse foyer.
We hope that the this information answers most of the questions that you might ask before making an application for membership but if you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact:
