2012 The D K Wright Trophies & Spring 3

Sunday 20th May 2012 - Glasson Sailing Club

All the photos are 'library' photos - sorry no photos today

John Howarth 022cs & Ivan Haslam ivans were the Officers of the Day

It was a pleasant day but sadly there was hardly any wind.  North easterlies were forecast but we had mostly west.

Six boats turned up and took to the water.

First Race

dkwr1s
The course was set at Ss - Ds - BPs - Bp - 18s - Ss

We coaxed our boats towards D, I thought we'd never make it, let alone get to the second mark, the Basil Perch.  Martin & Sammy, RS400, got away first closed followed by John, Enterprise then Steve, Mirror, and Chris, 420, Peter, Scow, with Michael, Mirror, being left behind.  Martin & Sammy and John seemed to get nowhere once they had got close to D and Michael was surprised that he caught up Steve and Peter and passed them being closely behind Chris when they rounded D.  Martin & Sammy and John drew away and Michael kept close to Chris finishing in that order. The OODs reduced the race to one lap and as time was pressing, in order to get a second race in, they retired Steve and Peter when they still had two legs left to complete the lap.  (Strictly speaking the sailing directions state that subsequent boats must finish within 30 minutes of the first boat finishing - it is always difficult making decisions like this)

The Second Race

dkwr2s
was over a shorter course: Ss - Bs - 18s - Ss.

Five of us got away OK but Peter was still completing his lap and he had a later start than the rest of us.  Martin & Sammy gradually pulled away from John who pulled away from Chris and Michael.  On the first lap Michael sailed direct to 18, the experts followd the dotted line.  On the second lap attempting to go straight to 18 resulted in gradually being swept downstream.  Going straight to 18 on lap one probably put Michael out of contention!  Following the dotted line took you out of the strong tidal stream, which increased for the second lap.  Most of us managed two laps but, because of his late start, Peter only got one in.

Adding points from both races, after handicap, Martin & Sammy tied with Michael on 3.75 points but because Martin & Sammy were ahead of Michael in the second race they were judged the overall winners.  Michael was second and John third on 4 points. Chris was fourth, Steve fifth and Peter 6th.
