Today we had thirty-six walkers - another good turnout for a Thursday however our numbers were swelled by eight delightful ladies for Heath Charnock Women's Institute. They are a walking group within HCWI and usually walk from Rivington. We had a lovely morning for the walks, dry, a little cool but the sun was shining on us. James stepped in at the last moment to lead the main group with David H back marker
The Elite group, eight today followed us through the Car Park but diverted to walk passed the sunny side of the Hall and then down Snake Hill
We left Shady Lane through the torturous path to the 'broken' kissing gate. Some excellent news: Chorley Ramblers have started a 'Miles without Stiles' initiative and they are going to replace this former stile/kissing gate: "We have agreed with Cuerden Valley (Park) Trust to install . . . 1 Pedestrian Gate . . . at SD 5652 2303 on Clayton-le-Woods 13 (Footpath Number) where the footpath across a filed meets Shady Lane. The kissing gate will replace a broken kissing gate, a difficult and narrow stretch of path and 2 stiles" Information taken from Chorley Ramblers Out and About Newssheet provided by Eileen P, thank you Eileen.
We walked along the verge and path to reenter the Park and walk along the Queen Mother's Avenue of Oaks for a short while before leaving the Cycle Path to
Rejoining the Cycle Path just before the Covert Pond we continued along the path but turned up into Gravel Hole Wood, walking through Dog Kennel Wood coming out to turn left along
We followed the Cycle Path to the Wooden Bridge, walked up Cardiac Hill into the Pinetum and back to the Visitors Centre. The elite walkers turned off Snake Hill up Bikers Hill and into Cock Cabin Wood walking anticlockwise round and leaving the wood to walk along the Cycle Path back through Walkers Wood to Cross the Stone Bridge. They walked round the Picnic Area, climbed up the long steps, walked along the Dam alongside the Lake, down the short steps and along the river, Cycle Path, to the Wooden Bridge, walked up Cardiac Hill into the Pinetum and back to the Visitors Centre.
